Many tools today can be found on the Internet by any webmaster. Among them, a service that allows you to find out the history of a domain would be unique.

One stop service

Unfortunately, there is no such resource yet. But to get a more or less complete picture of the history of the address name, you can use paid services.

  1. For example, the portal provides access to its database, from which you can learn about changes in domain ratings for at least $0.10: Yandex - TCI, Google - PR, Alexa; as well as changing DNS records, HTTP requests and responses.

These and other similar portals make it easier to study the history of the domain, but at the same time they offer other paid services that are freely available. Until now, web builders have to get disparate data from different sources.

Free Access: Whois

The most popular service for checking a domain name for employment is Whois. On its official portal, you can also view DNS- records for free, allowing you to find out the provider and corporate emailmailbox if the current domain owner has one; IP address of the server (provider); server response time to visitor request.

But the history of the domain is not shown in all this information.

Many Internet portals have placed this service on their pages and addedsomething of their own to it. For example,, a well-known domain name registrar, offers one month free access to Whois and hosting history. It can be used only by partners selling domains (documentation is required to start cooperation). A one-time request about previous owners from the moment of its registration will cost 90 rubles (much more expensive than the previously reviewed services, but from the very beginning, and not just in recent years).

Available information about any domain

A lot of useful information about a busy domain can be obtained for free at

  • name of the owner or company to which the site is registered;
  • date of first registration and number of entries made since then in the Whois service;
  • hosting name, date of its registration and location (country, city);
  • Server IP address and type;
  • number of sites on the same server and some specific names from this list;
  • link to feedback with the domain administrator;
  • domain registration date for current user and expiration date;
  • percentage of correspondence (relevance) of the site name to its meta description and keywordswords;
  • list of these phrases and the meta description itself, compiled by the administrator;
  • site seo-optimization indicator (in percent) and even advice on how to improve this indicator;
  • number of images, internal and outgoing links.

The site also provides a list of similar domains that have never been registered. A complete domain history (including all owners, changes to important records) is on sale for $49. Before buying, the system notifies you how much useful information you will receive, so as not to pay in vain for a "zero" report. Thus, using the system, you will surely find out the age of the site and the presence of its background without paying a penny.

Story in Pictures: Wayback Machine

Many masters know that you can see the content of the domain (main and other pages), using the search engine cache (archive the pages of each site). If he is busy, released or just released, you can see firsthand the theme of the site (what it was or is). To do this, just type the address in the search engine and click on the item "Saved copy" in the results.

But few people know that all cached pages are stored in an archive and are available for viewing in the free Wayback Machine service, which, like Whois, many sites have hosted. To view the history of a domain, on the official portal of the service, you need to enter the web address you are interested in and find the highlighted number on the calendar. Then point to it and click onlink. The main page archived by the search engine on that particular calendar day will open. The database contains snapshots of sites since 1997.

If you didn't find anything, it doesn't mean that the domain's history is missing. It might not be cached by search engines. This happens, but extremely rarely. Firstly, if the owner has entered a tag prohibiting saving in the page code; secondly, if the search engine did not have time to cache the site (either the Internet project did not pass the system filters, or it closed very quickly).

The Wayback Machine portal archive is also useful because it allows you to find out if the domain matches your project (check for relevance). For websites that do not have a regional affiliation, it does not matter that the owner has changed, that a site of a different theme can be created, that search engines will change the search results in accordance with new information, it really matters how Internet users remember it, what they expect to see when clicking on this address.

Worth paying for

So, you can check the history of a domain on different web resources both for free and for free. The information they provide is collected by webmasters, rather to study competitors. Knowing who was the owner and when the name was registered for the first time does not give anything. This is what is really important to know: is it in the search engine ban, is it blacklisted by Yandex (AGS filter) and others, is it banned from indexing. Therefore, it is worth paying for information about rating changes (for example, Yandex TCI). But this information is not essential. If the new site isconstantly checked by search engine robots, then over time a good Internet resource will prove itself on the positive side and will be “pardoned” if it was blacklisted. But this will take more than one week.

How to tell if a new site has rid itself of a load of negative history

When a domain has already been purchased, you can tell if a site is blacklisted by the way it is indexed. If the robot of the system constantly updates information, this is visible in your personal webmaster account, and the site pages are not indexed for a long time (they are not shown to users in the search engine), then it is blacklisted. For example, in the "History" section in your Yandex account, you can see how the number of pages in the search has changed over time. On the graph, the indicator should grow, preferably exponentially.

For specialists in the creation and promotion of sites, the history of the domain has always been important. However, over time, with changes in search engines, the need for such information has disappeared. As web developers would say: “This is a dead topic.”
